GPES Data for Consented Research (GDCR)
Purpose and outline
This service is established under the GPES Data for Consented Research Directions 2026. These require NHS England to share coded GP health record data it already holds with specific, approved research studies when explicit consent has been provided by or on behalf of the patient.
GDCR uses the same data collected by NHSE for GPES Data for Pandemic Planning and Research (GDPPR). No new physical data collection is required.
NHSE issued a Data Provision Notice (DPN) to GPs under section 259 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 requiring data for GDPPR purposes. An additional DPN has been issued also requiring the data for the purposes of GDCR. Practices are legally required to comply with both DPNs.
